Simple, mind-engaging journal prompts are a great transition activity between our busy morning arrivals and beginning our first subject of the day. They calm the physical and quiet the mental while promoting creative self-expression...
Each month I would ask my kids to 'donate' a question, anonymously, to our classroom's journal box and randomly incorporate one of their questions in a list of 3 for morning warm-up, or afternoon, after Physical Education outdoors, or (you choose here), with a voluntary verbal classroom share option attached. And of course, they would be excited to see their question at the top of the 3 listed prompts, with the teacher selecting his/her question for a verbal classroom share as well. Here are a few Grade 3 prompts...
>>> Choose one and go with the flow (adapting to Grade level as needed):
1. Create your own holiday. Name the day and date, and share the traditions of this day.
2. What song makes you feel content and why?
3. Describe your perfect morning from waking up to lunch/ early afternoon. (Hopefully you'll be up before noon?) :)
>>> More below...
1. You have been selected to participate in a special event in another country. List three things you would want to know before accepting the invitation.
2. What helps you cope/ get through a difficult day. Share a tip or two or three?
3. Think of a rule you would like to see implemented in our classroom to encourage each other.
